16 Going On 70

At just the young age of sixteen, I unknowingly began my premature journey of becoming an achey-jointed old woman. I was just your typical teenage girl on a club soccer team when basically everything went into shambles, well, my knee and soccer career that is. I can still feel the giving away of my leg as my opponent abruptly bumps her knee straight into mine, causing an unnatural bend of my knee. Obviously, I was unable to see it from an outside point-of-view, but I like to imagine it bending backwards much like a flamingo. It felt as if time had stopped and I was merely in a slow-motion daze as I gradually fell to the grass beneath my cleats...

The Impact Electronics Have On Our Health

In 2009, Samantha Boutet and her seemingly healthy family were living in the lower mainland area of British Columbia. Around that time, Samantha’s daughter, Amelia Boutet, suddenly began suffering from daily migraines and headaches at just nine years old.  Amelia underwent numerous medical evaluations, but a diagnosis could not be established. Even their pediatrician at BC Children’s Hospital could not explain the migraines. Her symptoms seemed to diminish during a camping trip the family took. Upon returning to school, her symptoms worsened. In addition to headaches, she began to experience dizziness, heart palpitations, and an inability to concentrate. School officials became concerned with Amelia’s symptoms and suggested that she was suffering from anxiety. This didn’t sit well with Boutet, a Naturopathic Physician, but she could still not explain why these symptoms only occurred at school...

Short Fiction Analysis Essay

Character Analysis of Janet in McKnight Malmar’s “The Storm”

In McKnight Malmar’s “The Storm”, Janet plays the main character. The recently married, thirty-one year old is described as “childlike” and “immature, yet appealing”. In the middle of a forceful downpour, she returns home early from a visit with her ill sister anticipating to find her “comforting” husband, Ben, excited by her unexpected arrival, but instead finds herself in the secluded house alone. Encountering frightening events that seem to be intensifying, she longs for her Ben’s company, feeling unsure if whether she is hallucinating or in fact living a nightmare. Janet plays an obscure character burdened with loneliness, remorse, and terror illustrated through her constant uneasiness from beginning to end, portraying the irony brought about by twisted perceptions...

Reflection

After taking English 1010, I can honestly say that I have improved as a writer. I learned how to properly cite in MLA format--which I had never understood before--and even where to find reliable sources. I had never written a reflection paper before this semester, which was a very fun essay to write. Another type of paper I had never written before this class was a short fiction analysis. Before, I beleived that there were two types of papers; a boring research paper and a creative story. I am excited to move on to my next college English class, as I now feel I am ready to conquer it.
